Firstly, it is a good idea to be aware how electricity works.  Electricity naturally tries to flow to the earth or ground, and will go through any material it can which conducts electricity to get there.  Certain materials like wood and glass are bad conductors of electricity (the current will not easily go through).  Our bodies are easily able to conduct electricity thanks to the amount of water in our bodies!  An electric shock occurs when electricity flows through parts of the body.

It is very important to understand what you can and cannot do around the house when it comes to fixing or repairing electricial things.  If in doubt of your knowledge or skill, always ask a qualified electrician to perform the work for you.


Ways to Prevent Electrical Fires in the Home

Electrical fires are one of the most common forms of house fire.  They can lead to tremendous damage to your home or office!  They are incredibly dangerous and can lead to injury and even death.  You can prevent house fires by following a few basic safety procedures when dealing with electrical plugs and outlets.

Proper maintenance of your electrical goods go a long way.  Make sure your plugs are all pushed in fully to the sockets when in use.  Loose fitting plugs can cause shocks and be a fire hazard.  It is a good idea to cover any unused electrical sockets, as these can be a risk for young children.

You shouldn’t tamper with electrical products or plugs such as bending or twisting the prongs.  Also be sure to only remove and insert the plug by holding the covered top part of the plug rather than the cord.
